Questions
Questions families ask
Which ages and hours do you have?
Spelt is for children who are 3 or 4 years old. The morning classes run from 8:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and the afternoon class from 12:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
How does a tour work?
Tours are in the morning, while a class is meeting. You see the room, watch the routines and talk with a teacher. You can bring your child.
What sets tuition?
Your child's class and the number of days a week set tuition. We go through the figures with you in writing at the tour.
How is a place held, and how does the waitlist work?
When we offer a place, you hold it with the registration fee and the first month's tuition. When a class is full, you join the waitlist, and we offer places in the order families joined.
Is Spelt licensed?
Yes. Spelt is licensed by OCFS, New York's Office of Children and Family Services, as a child day care center. The license is posted at the entry, and you are welcome to ask to see it at your tour.
What happens when a child is ill?
A child with a fever, vomiting or a contagious illness stays home. If a child becomes ill at school, we call you, and a teacher stays with them until you arrive.
What about photos of my child?
We ask your written permission before we share any photo of your child, on this site, in newsletters or on social media, and you can change your answer at any time. We never put a child's name with a photo, and the photos on this site are examples until we replace them with our own.
What should my child bring?
A water bottle, a labeled bag with a full change of clothes and shoes they can put on alone. We go outside most days, so please send a coat, hat and mittens or rain boots in season.
What about toilet learning?
We ask children to be using the toilet, and we help them with it. If your child is still learning, tell us at the tour. Accidents happen, and we handle them calmly and in private.
How do you handle a hard morning?
A teacher stays close, says what is happening in plain words and gives the child time and a quiet place. We tell you at pickup what happened and ask what works at home.
